Mr. Eight Dollars (also spelled Mr. $8 and formerly known as V) is an emote on the Gatorbox Twitch channel. It is a cropped version of Twitch's character used to advertise their annual "SUB-tember" promotion where channel subscriptions are offered at a discount during the month of September. The character, whose name (if any) is not actually known, is a cartoony version of the "SUBSCRIBE" button that has a face at the end of it. The face resembles the ":v" or "pac-man" emoticon originally made famous by Something Awful in the 2000's. The text version of the emote (:v) is often used in the stream's chatroom and since this character was making the face associated with it a couple of viewers requested adding the character as an emote.

Name

Usually, the SUB-tember discount that this character is from has several requirements in order to fulfill it despite only being worth a couple of dollars and only applying to the lowest-price subscription on offer. This has led many viewers to poke fun at the Twitch platform hurting for cash where they go as far as to announce a big month-long discount event that most people cannot qualify for rendering the whole thing useless. When the emote was added in 2023 (during that year's SUB-tember promo) it did not have an official name, most people just called it "V". A year later in 2024 Twitch posted an announcement that the price of a standard channel subscription would be raised to $8 per month, a two dollar raise from the then-current $6 price (which itself had been raised from the popular $5 rate the platform was known for). This put the price of a standard subscription close to the cost of a "tier 2" subscription ($10) blurring the actual value of the product itself and making the resulting 50% savings close to what the original price of a subscription was before all the price hikes.

Despite being associated with the SUB-tember event the "V" emote's use within the Gatorbox community generally has nothing to do with the sale whatsoever. Shortly after the news of the increased subscription price was announced Draco responded to someone posting the emote in chat and referred to it with "there's Mr. Eight Dollars", a jab at the expense of Twitch raising the price of subs. The emote's shortcut remained unchanged (GBv) until the 2025 season of the show when FrankerFaceZ expanded Gatorbox's allocated slots to 500. Draco added 26 emotes based on recognizable letters from famous video games all with the shortcut GB(letter). The Mr. Eight Dollars emote was still occupying the "GBv" slot at this time so it was officially renamed to GBmr8, reflecting its newer nickname. This was also done because the BetterTTV emote plugin, used for the YouTube livestream, did not allow for emoticon shortcuts less than four characters long and "GBmr8" stretched it out to five and acceptable for use on the platform.
