SCARYFACE2000 is one of the most prominent emoticons available in the Gatorbox channel on Twitch. Nessie was the first channel emote, but when Twitch provided Draco with two additional slots he elected to add a COLA can and the SCARYFACE2000 emote. The emoticon can trace its lineage back to the kids' MMO Club Penguin and Draco's time as an employee of Miniclip.com.

History

Upon launch Club Penguin came with a suite of built-in emoticons that players could use to chat and communicate to other players with. In the event that "Super Safe Chat" was enabled by a parent, emoticons would be the only method of communication that a player could use. The emoticons contained the usual fare of happy, sad, sarcastic, crying, embarrassed, and many more emotions represented in its line-up. One of them, however, would land the developer in a brief splash of hot water.

The ":D" emoticon in Club Penguin bore a striking resemblance to the logo of Yahoo Instant Messenger. Yahoo took notice of this and presumably issued a cease and desist order to Club Penguin's developer to remove the offending emote. The original emote was redrawn by the game artists and to differentiate it from Yahoo Instant Messenger's logo a bottom row of teeth was added. The mouth was also made to be in a slight smiling shape. The resulting emote was seen as unintentionally awful by players who called it "creepy" and "scary". Despite this the emote would remain in Club Penguin until the game's closure.

Meanwhile Draco, who was employed by Miniclip.com to supervise their Club Penguin forums, was not beholden to the terms demanded by Yahoo so over on the forums the original ":D" emote remained untouched. The new emote was added however with the shortcut ":scary:". It immediately began seeing use as a meme emoticon and was used to denote sarcasm and trolling, or to quote someone's post and respond with just the emote as if to mock the poster being quoted.

At one point Roastmaster vectorized the emote in Adobe Flash and blew it up to a 1,000x1,000 image macro that he used to spam various threads with. This resulted in action being taken against Roastmaster's account making him the only moderator to have ever been suspended while actively working on the forums.

The massive blown up version of the replacement ":D" emote is the exact same image that was sourced to create the SCARYFACE2000 emote on Gatorbox. It's name was derived from a comedy website that Draco and Roastmaster both wrote for. Said website already had an emoticon named "Scary Face" so this one was christened with "2000" on the end of it. It was also sometimes referred to as the "rape face", though this name has fallen out of favor due to its tastelessness.
