Steam Roll is a short-form comedy series taped offline and uploaded simultaneously to the Gatorbox YouTube and TikTok channels. It is the first, and currently only, series to be presented in a vertical aspect ratio. Each episode of the show focuses on the collectible digital trading cards and assorted rewards associated with them (badges, emoticons, and backgrounds) for a given Steam game and gives a mostly sardonic critique of the awardables.
The name of the show borrows the pun from the short-lived Steam Cleaning live series using "Steam" as both a way to name the gaming platform but also to invoke the imagery of something else. In this case, games are "steamrolled" on the show to link it to the associated construction vehicle of the same name while the show's branding incorporates imagery of sushi rolls to play on the wording twice. The sushi pun was devised as a way to future-proof the series for episodes that don't focus on a specific game, dubbed Steam Sashimi (where plain sushi cuts are used in the iconography instead). Due to length limitations on shortform content (three minutes on YouTube), extended cuts of each episode are also uploaded as standard 16:9 videos under the name Steam Roll Big Picture (referencing the fullscreen "Big Picture" mode built into the Steam gaming platform).
History
In February 2026 a pilot was posted to the Gatorbox YouTube channel under the name "This Is A Video For Something Called Steam Roll". The game highlighted was Weed Shop 2; according to Draco, there was no particular significance to the game beyond being the one shown to him in the randomized banner gallery on the Steam Card Exchange homepage when he sat down to write a sample episode. Reception to Steam Roll as a proof-of-concept was positive and in March 2026 it was announced the show entered pre-production. Steam Roll was fast-tracked ahead of persistent production complications with Articles of Conflagration and scheduling issues with the other cast members of Gatorbox is Off the Air. A second pilot episode, made from a complete re-take of the Weed Shop 2 script, was shared to the Gatorbox community in May 2026 as a teaser for the series ahead of its proper launch.
Recurring Segments
Established in the pilot episode, every installment of Steam Roll features the following segments in this order:
- Introduction: The game is briefly described as its trailer plays.
- Professional Grade: The artwork of each of the game's trading cards.
- Down Badge: The game's five standard profile badges.
- Smiley Central: The game's catalog of awardable emoticons.
- Living in the Background: The game's catalog of awardable profile backgrounds.
- Foiled Again!: The game's special "foil" variant badge.
Each segment is introduced with a brief title card that covers the top fifth of the screen (with the exception of the intro since it serves as a cold open). Games with a substantial number of awardables generally have most of them cut from the shortform vertical versions of their episodes, however the Big Picture cuts of Steam Roll are comprehensive and feature everything. The standard and Big Picture versions are also created from two distinct takes of the content; Draco delivers lines much more quickly in the vertical versions and the punchlines have been simplified whereas Big Picture cuts have more deliberate pacing and expanded setups.
Foil badges were removed from the "Down Badge" segment and given their own showcase in order to create a "game" that viewers can play along to. Because foil variant cards are exceedingly rare it's unlikely players will obtain them through traditional drops or packs; the "Foiled Again" segment adds up the current Steam Marketplace value of each foil card to get the cost of "buying" the foil badge outright. After the total amount is revealed, which is usually exorbitantly high for what amounts to an intangible digital good, Draco caps off the episode by inviting viewers to let him know in a comment how far off their guess was usually by way of incorporating a unit of measurement relevant to the game (for example, a "dimebag" in the case of the Weed Shop 2 pilot). Viewers are also encouraged to name a game they'd like to see get "steam rolled" next.
